In this post we will cover the language that we feel is the best for web development. It is an opinionated blog post, so please don’t take it too seriously.

What is the best programming language to learn? This question has been asked on Quora countless times. There is no one answer, but there are some good rules of thumb.

The most popular programming language in 2018 is JavaScript, with over 28% of all developers using it. Then comes HTML/CSS at 25%, SQL at 24%, and Python at 19%. Java and PHP round out the top six with about 18% each.

In this chapter, I will introduce the most basic tools for writing programs: variables, expressions, statements, and functions. The purpose of this chapter is not only to explain these tools but also to show you how to use them.
