It is a set of software development guidelines for the C programming language developed by MISRA (Motor Industry Software Reliability Association) to address some of the issues with developing safety-critical systems with C. MISRA C is a set of guidelines developed to improve the reliability and safety of software written in the C programming language. It was originally developed to be used by the motor industry, but has since been adopted by other industries, including aerospace and medical devices. MISRA C is not required by law, but is often selected as a good practice guide for software development in safety-critical systems.
MISRA C 2012 is the third edition of the standard, which defines coding rules (and also gives guidelines on some aspects of coding style) that are intended to encourage safe and reliable code. The standard was published in February 2012, and replaced MISRA C:2004.
The standard defines a list of rules that need to be followed when writing software in C. Attempts to follow all the rules will probably result in sub-optimal code, so it is necessary to consider where you want your program to be robust against errors, and what should be done if an error occurs.
Some rules do not apply if they are used with a specific software toolkit or library.[citation needed] In some cases, it may be appropriate to use a different function or library to mitigate possible problems (e.g., use strlcpy instead of strcpy).
