PDF417 is a two-dimensional barcode which can be scanned by an optical scanner. It is also known as a stacked linear barcode due to its unique “stacked” design. PDF417 is able to encode text, digits, numbers and even bytes of data, such as extended ASCII characters and small binary files.

When using the PDF417 barcodes, it’s critical that you use the correct encoding scheme for your application. For example, if you’re encoding more than just standard alphanumeric characters, you’ll need to switch from ASCII to Binary mode. If you fail to do this, the software will try to encode your data into one of the 256 character slots available in ASCII mode – which isn’t possible in many cases.

PDF417 is a stacked linear barcode format used in a variety of applications such as transport, identification cards, and inventory management. PDF stands for Portable Data File. The 417 signifies that each pattern in the code consists of 4 bars and spaces in a pattern that is 17 units (modules) long. The PDF417 symbology was invented by Dr. Ynjiun P. Wang at Symbol Technologies in 1991.[1]

PDF417 is one of the formats that can be used to print postage accepted by the United States Postal Service. The United States Postal Service prefers that the barcodes be printed with a white background and a height of at least 0.75 inches (19 mm).

Unlike other linear barcode symbologies, which are dithered to accommodate only 50% reflectance (e.g., Code 39), PDF417 codes can accommodate reflectance values up to 90%. This allows more flexibility on printing surfaces, as well as smaller point sizes for a given module width (N).
