He learned he was a lucky person at an early age. In his sophomore year of high school, his father had gotten sick and died. The family was left with no money, and they had to sell their house. That same year, his younger sister, Kelly, got sick too. At first she seemed to have the flu, but she developed a rash that wouldn’t go away. She got weaker and weaker, until she ended up in the hospital. They discovered that she had multiple organ failure due to toxic shock syndrome from a tampon.

Because there was no money for anything but food and rent, her mother couldn’t afford the tampons Kelly needed for her period. So she used one for several days at a time, and it ended up causing serious damage to her body.

The doctors put her on dialysis and then on life support. The medical bills were mounting quickly; if they didn’t find some way to pay them soon, they would be homeless again, this time without even their car or TV set to sell.
