What is Google Blockly?
Google Blockly is a client-side, visual programming editor and language. Here’s a simple example:
Blockly provides an interface to write programs without having to know a text-based programming language. Instead of writing lines of code, you can drag blocks together and run your program by pressing the play button.
Blockly has been used in dozens of applications over the last five years – from games like Code.org’s Star Wars: Building a Galaxy with Code to more educational environments such as Pencil Code and Bee-Bot. Other examples include App Inventor, Hopscotch, Maker Toolkit, and Tynker. It is also used in robotics projects like Parallax’s Scribbler Robot and Dash & Dot. We are excited to see how people will use Blockly as it becomes open source!
Created by Neil Fraser and the Google Developer Relations team, Google Blockly is an open source, visual programming editor. It is free to use for both commercial and non-commercial purposes. The differentiating feature of Blockly is that it does not require typing or any prior experience with programming languages.

What is Blockly?

Blockly is a Google project used in several products, including YouTube Kids (web and app), an Android experiment called Grasshopper, and the Scratch-like MIT App Inventor.
How does it work?
Blockly uses blocks that link together like puzzle pieces to represent code concepts like variables, logical expressions, loops, and more. Each block has an editable field for parameters specific to that block. For example, the “set variable” block allows you to type the variable name into its field.

We’ve created some sample programs for you to explore. They are fully interactive and include documentation explaining how each feature works so you can see the code in action before creating your own version from scratch!

Blockly was developed by Neil Fraser at Google to help teach kids how to code their own games and apps using a simple visual interface.
